Description This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to select suitable cadaveric donors for bone, eye, skin and heart valve tissues and notifying the donor co-ordinator for transplantation of research

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Assess suitability for donation
  • Determine general suitability using regular tissue selection criteria
  • Check donor's recent health history and medications to determine donor suitability
  • Compare information provided through autopsy with existing records and identify discrepancies
  • Determine age and weight limits meet donor selection criteria
  • Determine that tissue meets donor selection criteria
  • Check for any tissue abnormality
  • Where information is obtained which indicates that the donor may be unsuitable, seek further guidance is explained clearly and sensitively and accurate information is passed on to the appropriate person

  • Establish donor's consent for donation and purpose of donation
  • Explain the donation process accurately to relevant other/s in a manner that meets needs

Element: Remove donated tissue
  • Undertake removal of donated tissue in accordance with organisation policies and procedures and work health and safety (OHS) requirements
  • Store donated tissue in accordance with organisation policies and procedures and WHS requirements
  • Notify donor co-ordinator of donation and availability of tissue
  • Arrange for transportation of tissue and/or long term storage in accordance with organisation policies and procedures and WHS requirements

  • Enter relevant information clearly and accurately into the donor record
  • Ensure all actions are document in accordance with organisation policies and procedures
  • Maintain records in accordance with organisation policies and procedures and WHS requirements
  • Maintain the confidentiality of the donor

Written assignments/projects or questioning should be used to assess knowledge

Case study and scenario as a basis for discussion of issues and strategies to contribute to best practice

Clinical skills involving direct client care are to be assessed initially in a simulated clinical setting (laboratory)
If successful, a second assessment is to be conducted during workplace application under direct supervision

Access and equity considerations:

All workers in the health industry should be aware of access and equity issues in relation to their own area of work

All workers should develop their ability to work in a culturally diverse environment

In recognition of particular health issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, workers should be aware of cultural, historical and current issues impacting on health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Assessors and trainers must take into account relevant access and equity issues, in particular relating to factors impacting on health of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities

Factors that influence the importance and potential impact on the quality of the donation may include

Infectious diseases and their incubation periods

Sexual or mucosal contact or exchange of body fluids

Commonly used medicines and their side effects

Weight limits

How frequently a potential donor may donate for varying types of donations

Geographical locations which require special consideration

Hazardous occupations/recreational activities

Effect of invasive procedures, for example tattooing

Passive immunisation and vaccinations

Past and present medical conditions other than infections

Injuries and illnesses

Recent major surgery

Reasons for the careful selection of tissue donors may include:

Health of donor prior to death
